Break Time

She leaned over and flipped off the switch.

No need for the air conditioner. Time to open all the windows and let in the fresh, cool breeze. Quite a change from the last month of blow-torch-blasting, egg-frying-on-the-sidewalk heat. The kind of heat where your feet literally blister when you walk barefoot on the pavement for too long. And sweat-glistened skin turns into integumentary drip hoses. The kind of heat where you notice the difference between 100 degrees and 110 and think to yourself how enjoyable is the former.

The two-leggeds are happier for a few days. Nicer to each other. Giving thanks for the break, the coolness, the all too few, but still welcome, drops of rain. Smiling. Commenting to each other on this beautiful gift given in the middle of a Hell Hole of a hot summer. The four-leggeds notice too. And the birds, the insects and the plants all join in the enjoyment. Even the fish notice they don't have to swim as deep to find cold spots in the waterways. And the parched, over baked earth sighs with relief.

But all too soon, the two-leggeds forget to give thanks and start taking these pleasures for granted. They come to expect that these blissful days will continue without interruption. They start thinking that they control the world around them.

She sees this and sighs in exasperation. "Angel, my love," she says to her winged companion. "See that group of beings down there along the west coast of the United States of America? I have been working with them on gratitude. For a minute I thought they were getting it but I can now see that I have more work to do. Can you flip that switch back on and turn the setting to INCINERATE? No, just turn it to HIGH HEAT instead. God only uses INCINERATE when she has to teach the biggest of lessons."

I know what you mean about the heat, next time I get surgery I think I will wait until winter, it has been terribly hot down here and for some reason, humid too. If it was not so humid it would be more bearable, but at least it has helped with any fires we have had so far. I hope you have not had the humidity also.

My A/C has been running non-stop for over two months now. Electric bill almost 500 dollars for one month. This sucks. And if they raise electric rates, next summer I will have to find somewhere to go during the day. Oh well, this is sunny Southern California. Oh I know where I can go.....the Indian casinos. One of them is a ten minute drive. But I hate the smoke...sigh.

God bless.

Tut-tut: It surely feels like this is what is happening. Instead of an Artic blast, we get a Hellish blast.

Brian: I never thought about you being a culprit. Would you hurry up with your evolution? I'm cookin' here!

Sherry: No, we've not had the humidity just the heat...and the fires now due to last week's thunder and lightning storms in the mountains. $500 electric bill? Yoiks! Hard to say if the casinos will cut your costs or not until you find out how your luck rolls.

Ronda, can relate. Only over on the East Coast they keep playing with the shower: on-off-on-off-wet-dry-soaked-wetter-kinda dry-wet...and the humidty, OY! I'll take a dry heat any day, I will!

Oh dear, your writing has made me almost literally feel that blistering heat...

I am chuckling because A) we all know God is a Man, and B) it's just a matter of time before He sends you off into the ocean, drifting.

Subby: This has been a summer of extremes. I just wish we could trade off for a bit.

Leah: Oh, Leah, I wish I was with you in the Adirnodak's right now.

Phil: I love delusional men and surfing.

People are very arrogant in the way that they want to control everything, maybe storms and heatwaves are a good thing sometimes to put us in our place!

The last few months have been cooler than the norm and this week suddenly it's hot and humid. This afternoon during a walk in the sunshine despite wearing appropriate cover-up clothes, hat and sunglasses with water along, I felt like I'd been well baked by the time I returned home.

Showing gratitude for one's daily blessings is always a good as it helps with the flow of good things in your life.

I love summer, but I hate fire season.

Ronda Laveen said...

Otin: Yes, weather has a way of straifing with the shock and awe factor.

Gemel: So are you.

Barbara: Some times it is the simple of things that humble us.

Megan: Oh, the fires are upon us. So far you guys are okay, Ya?

what a beautiful world you live in! i am scrambling a bit this weekend. i need some rest ... but i am trying to shoot lassen national park, burney falls, lake taho and night shots of reno by sunday night. it's probably not going to all happen but when i am alone it keeps my mind from missing home as much as i really do. i could have stuck dozens of photos in from today. tomorrow i also need to head out towards quincy ... so i may get some things along the way that will be complelt unplanned. duh that happens all the time.
God bless!

Weird isn't it. During 45 degrees last summer I was begging for winter. Now sitting in front of the heater and waking to frosty mornings, I'm screaming for summer . .if onlly it could be spring all year round! Although I have to say, it's rare that we go more than four or five days without a southerly buster or a cooling storm. Fall is coming!

Ronda Laveen said...

Stephen: I look forward to seeing your photos of those areas. I KNOW you will get many awesome shots. Here, you can go in any direction and find amazing geology. Can't wait for your posts. It is nice to see another's view of my world. Carry on nikonsniper!

Baino: I, too, wish sometimes for the temperateness of spring to last year long. And then I think, because it is so beautiful here, it would get too crowded. I think it is only the extreme weather (and lack of industry) that keeps people from moving here in droves. A southerly buster or a cooling storm sounds marvelous. Although, when we get cooling storms, we get lightning and fires. Which is what happend last week.

It's so cool that Phil is now a follower of your blog. Honestly all the worlds come together here in the blogosphere. Very excellent!

Now Ronda don't ASK for blistering heat!! What are you thinking? Gosh!!

Ronda Laveen said...

Candie: Twinkle, twinkle...

Reya: Yes, Phil stops by on ocassion and drops off one of his brilliant Phil-isms. Very quick witted, he is. All worlds DO come together in the blogosphere! I love the diversity.

Oh, I am most definitely not asking for blistering heat. I'm simply the reporter giving the play-by-play account of this summers active game. I think I should like to meet you at your alternate reality machine thingy and take a nice little trip. I'll buy the coffee. See you there in the wee hourse of Dreamtime:>

We two legged journeymen and women can get accustomed to things and then want even more. Instead of learning from the journey.

Ronda Laveen said...

Tony: Thanks. You are a cool guy so that should help.

TechnoBabe: Amen. You make such a great point! Welcome.

What an interesting post. Us that walk on two legs so often complain about what we have instead accepting each days beauty and reveling in the days that are special.

Ronda Laveen said...

Brian: we do indeed. Each day, each minute is a jewel.
