FREEEZE...MIAMI VICE!

It's hard to believe that it's been long enough that the 80s are considered nostalgic. How can 30 years just "poof" out of existence? Seems like only a few months ago that we were Flashdancing like maniacs in leg warmers and head bands while singing Betty Davis Eyes.

This is 80s Ronda wearing her patented 'big hair'. This is 80s Ronda being glad she opted for the perm instead of a mullet. What 80s Ronda really wanted was a Pat Benatar haircut, but I think she's glad now that she didn't do that either.

80s Ronda was big into bowling. The paparazzi caught her immediately after she threw this shot. If you look closely at the end of the alley, you'll see there are no pins left on the deck. In this photo, she's trying to explain to Crockett and Tubbs that she did NOT steal that strike. She keggled it fair and square. That's right, keggled as in bowled. Not kegeled, as in pelvic floor exercise. Big difference...now and in the 80s.

You remember Crockett and Tubbs don't you?

Crockett and Tubbs, played by Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas, are two Miami vice detectives from the Metro-Dade Police Department who go undercover to stop drug trafficking. It was one of the first television shows in many years to look really different. It is considered by some to be one of the most influential television series of all time. Unlike the standard cop shows, the creators used 1980s New Wave music, culture and visual effects to tell a story. Former lead singer of The Eagles, Don Henley, was often featured on the show. 80s Ronda really liked Don Henley.

For several years, every Friday night, 80s Ronda and her rowdy little band of miscreants met at 9 p.m. to watch the show. 80s Ronda always posted a lookout by the door so she would never have to hear:

"FREEZE...MIAMI VICE!".

Since she lived in California, that would have been badder than bad.

If you have 80's memories you'd like to share, post 'em up. Thanks, Kat for getting this retro blog theme going.

What do you mean it "SEEMS LIKE only a few months ago that we were Flashdancing like maniacs in leg warmers and head bands while singing Betty Davis Eyes?" It was...wasn't it?

Gosh, to actually say it out loud - 30 years - makes me feel so OLD! I remember those days well, but not often enough. Thanks for bringing them back to life Ronda.

P.S. My hair was bigger than yours. :)

Oh yea, forgot to mention - I'm not sure if you know about it or not, but I'm hosting a writing contest on my fiction site to celebrate my birthday this year - a 1K word story with the theme 'birthday'. I'd love to hear your story! http://theothersideofdeanna.wordpress.com/2010/06/18/announcing/

I like your perm; it becomes you, and makes you look a very feminine bowling player.

Bowling as a sport becomes you too. It's competitive ( and I think you are like that), it's social, enabling one to make friends, it is a good physical exercise. The transit from bowling to massaging seems a natural and smooth one.

Loved this!!! Your haircut was priceless. I followed a 17 Magazine instruction to cut your own hair. I put it in a ponytail on the top of my head and cut across the top. (You can imagine the results!) I also went for the short cut with the little tail hanging down.

I don't think I ever once watched "Miami Vice", but my husband was a big fan (I didn't know him then and probably would not have looked at him twice in the 80s, being a post-punkish gal.)

I loved your "miscreants" line.

Thanks for playing along!

Well I did not need a perm to get my hair to look like that. It just does it naturally and still does. My nickname was "Shirley Temple" because of all the ringlets that it goes into as it is drying.

And hard to believe that Madonna is still around after all those years. I loved to dance back then and just go crazy. For some reason I never got into the leggings, I guess because my daughters were into them and I just did not feel right to go into their territory.

Love the pics and I too miss bowling.

They are supposed to be bring back a new Miami Vice, at least that is what I heard. So be prepared you still might hear it.

God bless.

Actually, Ronda, I still flashdance like a maniac, so not much has changed for me. Have you seen my leg warmers? I could have swore I put them in my under ware drawer!

That picture of you was priceless! And so were the memories.

My best flashback of the eighties was doing the hustle in a little disco bar with friends. We'd line up and get our groove on! Remember those disco balls?

You look adorable --- In the 80's what a trip back in time -- we are becoming our parents -- Yikes. My son was born in 1979 so those years were more remembering enjoying being a parent and gardening and working oh yes and Madonna and Michael Jackson and Bruce Springsteen and Tina Turner -- I guess I was and now always into music and dance and not so much Television.

Fun post. Now if I survive this T-square --

Haha .. I didn't need a perm, and still have 'big hair' Yeh might have to have a crack at this and thanks for the new word 'keggled' How come Don Johnson never ever got a splat of anything on that white suit?

Ronda Laveen said...

Tony: Yes, the 20th Century...the olden days. Mr. Google is one wise dude.

Deanna: If your hair was bigger than mine, I wanna see proof. Please? I know! 30 years, yikes. When I actually did the math, I was floored. I missed the post about your writing contest. Will definitely check it out. Thanks.

DUTA: I was a very feminine competitor. I had coordinated outfits like you wouldn't believe. My style was part of my psych to get my A-game on.

Kat: OMG, you were one brave girl to follow the 17 Magazine's "cut your own hair" instructions. Spunky, you sound. Thanks for the fine theme post!

Sherry: I would kill for your ringlets. I guess we always want what we don't have. Do you still dance?

Dorraine: Oh, I do remember those disco balls. They still have one hanging in our local senior center. It always makes me wonder about their Friday night dances. They're probably still doing thi Hustle. I loved that dance. I finally got rid of my leg warmers...about a year before they came back in style. I'm sure they didn't fit me anymore. Well, maybe on my arms. For sure, not on my legs.

Brian: Yes, I know you're a Miami Vice fanboy, white jacke and all. Still waiting for that picture:-) Have a good time camping.

Joanny: Yes, so much good dance music came out of the 80s. Your 80's memories sound sweet and loving. Yes, T-square is next up on the itinerary. I hope you post your experiences.

Baino: I loved that perm and envy you for your "natural" one. I don't know how Don Johnson kept that white jacket so clean. If it were me, they'd have to have a clean one for every hour of the day. If it can be spilled or splatted, I will spill or splatter it. Would love to read your 80s post.

I thought that Glenn Fry appeared on that show a lot?

I never really watched it.

I remember you talking about the bowling before and trying to get it put into the olympics....see, I pay attention!

Ronda Laveen said...

Otin: Glenn Fry also appeared. He's cool too. You do pay attention to the bowling!

Leah said...

I never watched Miami Vice then, but I love it now. And that is such an awesome picture of you rocking out after your strike.

I lived in Montreal when Miami Vice was on TV. A budgie (Mervyn) I had used to mimic the sound of the flamingo wings when they took off in the opening credits.

Nostalgia, I suppose. But what really brings me nostalgia are the old Starsky and Hutch programs and Banacek.

I thought I remembered it - but what is - or was - a mullet?

Jingle said...

love bowling when my kids are younger, we have fun!
lovely post.
Happy Friday!

Ronda Laveen said...

Leah: it is fun seeing.those old programs. You're right though, I was rockin' that strike.

Barbara: I even miss the old Avengers episodes.

Dave: a mullet is a cut where the hair is short on top and in the front and the back is long. The most well known example is Billy Ray Cyrus' style in the 80s. The cut has since become an urban joke.

Jingle: Oh! You were a bowler too!

Reya Mellicker said...

LOVED Miami Vice. And I LOVE the big haired Ronda. I feel like you ... how could the 80's be so long ago??

It's time to go out and look at the moon. Maybe howl. Maybe ...

Ronda Laveen said...

Reya: I am almost tempted to get it permed and cut in that style. I could personally bring back ther perm. That style was SO EZ.

Ain't no maybe about the howlin'.

Aooooooooowwwww

I LOVED the 80's but then I was just a young thing learning all necessities needed to get drunk with friends in the local park!

notesfromnadir said...

That's so cool that you bowled & got strikes. I never could -- I'd be the 1 missing most of the pins.

Your 80s perm looks nice, very flattering.

I knew a guy who liked Miami Vice so much he had a white cotton sport jacket like they had. I vaguely remember the show, if only for the pastel colors!

Ronda Laveen said...

Candie: Hey, girl!!!! So glad you are back.

Jayne: Me too!

ED: Oh, you were learning all the important stuff:-)

Notes: I could have taught you to knock those pins down. That's funny about the guy who had the white sport coat.

Fun post, Ronda. Tonight I was watching the BET awards and Deneice Williams was on - she sang "Silly" and I was in heaven. and El DeBARGE!!. Well, if you listened to the radio in the 80s you've definitely heard them.

Do you still bowl?

I loved the eighties! Hmmmmm, I went through a very SERIOUS Madonna phase...wore the gloves, the short skirts and heels, ripped sweat shirts and WILD, BIG HAIR...spent many a night dancing the night away! I remember them FONDLY...don't know if I remember them ACCURATELY or not but NOW...looking back...it was ALL good!

;)

LOVE 80's Ronda!

I have vivid memories of things that happened a long time ago. But these days, people tend to think that 1995 was a very very long time ago. A different era all together!
