Sven, the Snow God

And, now, for our first look at the InaccuWeather forecast for Redding. Some places in the valley are already down to the 20s at this hour...if you can believe it! Chico is at 26 degrees right now and we've still got a long way to go before the night is over.

It is cold across the north state and it's going to stay that way for the next couple of days. Remember the snow I've been telling you we were going to get for the last couple of days? Well, it went to Sacramento, Stockton, Lodi...unusual places. It was cold enough for snow in the north state, the north part of the valley. But the moisture was just a little too far to the south, and it stayed to the south, so we didn't really get anything as far as snow is concerned. But the temperatures are really agreeable for a little snow tonight so we could have some by morning.

So, why, when the weather man promises snow in the a.m., do we always wake up to not a cloud in the sky? We have sneaky snow here in our little corner of California. It falls in when we aren't looking.

I met Sven, the Snow God, when I was a mere child praying for a snow day. He's quite the little trickster having a good laugh at our expense. Sven loves a good round of Peek-a-Boo I Got You or You've Been Pranked. Just like when someone points to a spot on your shirt with their index finger, you look down and then you get poked in the nose, I fall for his promise every time.

Okay, Sven, I have always been, and probably will always be, your sucker. I'm gonna look away now...k?

scen is such a trickster, he got me this last weekend...mixed it in with the rain so it would not stick around...oh, for a snow day!

I didn't know you were in northern California! You know I lived in Eureka for a year? I attended my freshman year of high school at Eureka High.

Northern california has the most mild climate I've ever experienced. It never went higher than 75 or lower than 50. Atleast, that's when I was there in 1995. Living there was the first time I experience a sunny Christmas day.

I'm stunned to hear about 26 and 20 degree temperatures. How strange.

We have a snow God in Cali. Oh okay, I know you do up there, but where the heck is he for down here. Next time you see him could you please ask him why he never visits us. LOL, we would freak out if he ever did, at least for more than a few moments.

I hope you get some snow soon, like in a few hours. I think it would be wonderful to wake up a white winter wonderland. Then have it gone by the time everyone got out on the road to drive to work. We can barely drive in the rain. They predicted rain for every day this week and we have had maybe one good day, I think it was Monday.

Does Sven know who our rain God is? I need to visit our rain god and ask him when is he going to bring back El Nino. But I guess any rain is better than no rain.

You have had a most interesting childhood. Love all the stories about it. Well actually, I love all your stories.

God bless.

Funny....being a weather forecaster would be a fun job. Job performance doesn't count...you can be wrong all the time! hee!

Ronda, I have something for you at my blog today.

Sven made a sneaky visit to Texas last week. We got your snow! Has only happened three times in the last fifteen years, so it was quite an event. I hope you get some soon!

Who is responsible for the rains? I love a rainy day, and often get sunshine instead. Possible a trickster involved there too?

Sven was hanging around my neck of the woods this morning and left a dusting.

And here I thought Sven might be out of some Norse legend...LOL!!

He made a sojourn here as well and left us with snow and sunshine..Hum....I prefer Lucy's Narnia to Sven's tease....Beggars can't be choosers, right?

Happy TT...

Once upon a clear bright day,
Sven the snow god came our way.
A promise made but seldom kept
Hasn't anyone taught him manners yet?

Well if it helps, I'll pray to Sven to send some of our snow your way. :D

Sven is his name!
Have a nice day Ronda!:)

Redding? Sweet. Feel free to come take some of the snow from Tahoe!

Ronda Laveen said...

Brian: Oh! So he sucked you in recently too? That guy!

Jai: No, I didn't know that you went to school in Eureka. I live about 3 hours inland, about an hour south of Mt. Shasta. Where you lived over on the coast the temperatures are very mild. Here, there is a wild swing in temps. They can range from the teens and 20s in the winter to 120 in the summer. This is normal for us.

Sherry: I'll check with Sven to find out the name of the rain god. I know it's his cousin but can' remember the name. They come from a long line of Weather Jesters and think their jokes are SO funny. I think the reason Sven doesn't make it down your way is that his sense of direction really stinks. He can't snow his way out of a paper bag.

Betsy: Great point! As a weathercaster, job performance doesn't matter and you can be wrong all the time. Talk about no stress.

Ronda Laveen said...

TechnoBabe: Thanks, I'll pop in for a visit.

Dorraine: Last week, in one of your posts, I read that you got snow in Texas. I wondered for a bit if that was normal for your area. I guess it's not. I'm glad you got to enjoy it but I knew that sneakster was up to something.

Leah: Definitely a trickster in the Rain Department soon. I'm gonna get to the bottom of these shenanigans. There is just too much free wheelin' going on in the weather biz.

Willow: That guy sure gets around:-)

Rebecca: Sven is only from the legend of my mind but, even though he's a tease, we're still buds.

Ronda Laveen said...

Dreamhaven: Wow! Is that just off the top of your head? You are so quick. It must be lyrical inside your head.

R.J. Edwards: Please do! We'll take some of that snow, gladly.

Candie: Yes, SVEN! Check it out. xxoo

JeffScape: Yes, Redding. Gosh, I didn't realize that you were that close to me. No wonder you often have snow in your stories. I saw on the news that you guys got a whole bunch of that white stuff with this storm.

We got dumped with 8+ inches yesterday. Nice to see, not as much fun to shovel!

Sven is just teasing us in Indiana...i sure he'll be back in time for Christmas.

Sven was here yesterday, that's for sure! And this morn's clear skies have given way to more threatening clouds. Methinks Sven could stick around for a while ;)

Cousin of Sven, the Rain God, is visiting here today...I'll send him to Mrsupole so the drought will end...

Happy TT!

A friend of mine moved from Oregon to Houston recently - emailed last week whining about the snow that landed there. HAH - there is Sven playing tricks again.

Kat Mortensen said...

Sven is being far too generous in my neck of the woods at the moment. Can I have some California sunshine please?

Gladys said...

Sven doesn't visit us this far south. He does however blow his cold breath in our general direction from time to time.

Janice said...

This northern CA coldspell is intense. The chickadees in the yard are skating as they make a landing on their birdbath. Maybe Sven will visit you yet.

Ronda Laveen said...

Wings: We've only gotten that much snow a few times during my nearly 60 years. May your shoveling go easy.

Tom: Yes, he told me he was messin' with Indiana. But I think he has a big surprise in store for you.

Subby: Once Sven finds a joke he likes, he stays with it for a while. It takes a while for him to tire of it.

e: Would you send Cousin of Sven, the Rain God on to Mrsupole? That is so nice of you. She'll be quite happy. Actually, we could use him here too! If he'd arrived earlier, he could have helped Sven make us that snow.

Ronda Laveen said...

Stephanie: HA! So your friend thought she could avoid Sven by moving from Oregon to Texas? Sven knows all. He snowed her bootie didn't he?

Kat: Perhaps we can work out a trade. Snow for sunshine. Actually, I'll speak to Sven's aunt, the goddess of Sun. Her name is the Seventh Ray.

Gladys: I'm glad he brushes his teeth then. An foul, icy, artic blast would be even less enjoyable.

Janice: Yes, I saw last night on your blog that you are not far from here. And, you are right, those poor little birds with ice for water. Hope they survive. I think Sven's headed out for a bit but with him, you never know!

Santa Claus said...

HO HO HO! I need to have a talk with Sven, after all, everyone should have snow at Christmas! Merry Christmas Ronda!

RLM Cooper said...

I think Betsy expressed my sentiments perfectly. :)

Ronda Laveen said...

Santa: Thanks. If Sven doesn't bring snow for Christmas, will you give him some coal?

AngelMay: When a girl's right, she's right!

Yeah...I NEVER believe the ole weather man! We had a skiff of snow and it disappeared within hours! NOW...FREEZING...just freezing!!

Love your FESTIVE mantel Ronda!

Ronda Laveen said...

DeeDee(Who is Tim Burton?) All I got from Sven was low temps and no snow. HooYa! Good to hear from you again.

Jill: That weather man is a flim-flam man. A non-commital relationship is what I have with hime. I wish it was my mantle but I borrow the work of others who are festive.

Rhonda,
So thanks for introducing me to the Snow God, Sven. Interesting fellow I might add; I agree, quite the trickster! :) Enjoying looking down through your blog here. You look like you're enjoying life to the fullest. Thanks for visiting my blog. The picture with that cute little dog praying over the treats is cracking me up. :) too funny. Christmas blessings to you and yours!

I have to tell my kids about Sven, now they wear their PJs inside out and backwards to get a snow day. Now they can appeal to Sven. Interesting post!

Jai Joshi said...

Ronda, that's so fascinating about how the temperature where you live swings so wildly from one season to another. I never imagined that it might get like that up in that part of the country. I'll have to check it out some day. I bet it's lovely.

Ronda Laveen said...

Megan: How did you know?

Tony: Sven definitely gets around.

Bach: Thanks for visiting the Wonderland. You are welcome any time. I do try to enjoy life to the fullest in all its many facets. Life A-Z, so to speak.

Kate: That is so cute that your kids wear their jammies inside out to get a snow day. When I used to bowl competetively, I had my lucky panties, my lucky outfit, and the strike-a-rific bowling towel. All things must be just right when invoking the gods.

Baino said...

We could do with a rain god down here too if you ever find where he's hiding. I didn't realise it snowed in California. I always think of it as being so temperate and mild except perhaps in the mountains. I hope he manages to shower you with a few cool flakes before the season ends.

JGH said...

We're doing our best to attract the snow god here. My kids keep telling me to sleep with my pajamas on inside out, a spoon under my pillow and flush an ice cube down the toilet . When you wake up, there should be snow on the ground!

Michael said...

I didn't know about "sven" but I certainly see snow around here in the foothills and left around this ares too. It is magical. hope your Sven tricks you in to snow when you least expect it and when home safe and warm.

lettuce said...

sneaky snow. ha! thats a nice thought

Ronda Laveen said...

Baino: I live at the north end of the Sacramento Valley and about an hour, in three directions, from the mountains: Lassen, Shasta and many other smaller mountains. We do catch snow, usually a couple times a year. I'll send Sven's cousin, the Rain God, your way. He's here visiting today.

JGH: I just recently heard a about the pajama trick and never about the spoon. The flushing the ice cube down the toilet is simply inspired!

...mmm...: Why thank you for the nicest wish. Yes, it would be so lovely to have it snow when I'm home, safe and warm. That is simply the best:-)

Lettuce: Thanks!

I feel sorry for poor meteorologists. It shouldn't really be called a science. Forecasting the weather is more of an art, you could even say a divination, than a science.

I, too, wish Sven would come visit us here in DC. But I'm not holding my breath!

Mike said...

Sorry if My story made you cry!

Hi! Thanks for your visit to my blog
http://ornamental-fishes.blogspot.com
Nice post. Best wishes.

Ronda Laveen said...

Joanne: Have a good trip and see you when you get back. Maybe I'll have a Sven report to give you.

Reya: You are so right. Weather forecasting is more like divination than a science. They try to put science to it but like a woman, she's gonna do what she's gonna do.

I'm not holding my breath for Sven either. You have a better chance than we do. Look forward to your first report.

Otin: Oh, but it was in such a good way.

Mahmood: You're welcome. My Bettas always die and I'm sure it's because I don't know how to take care of them. Maybe you'll give me the reason to try again.
