Shotgun!

"I call Shotgun!"

Maaco is riding Shotgun. He's a classic car buff and this, '67 Buick Skylark GS, is one of his faves. But, he's a fickle pooch and is loyal only to the hottest set of wheels around. He's been spotted cruising in some of the finest American muscle in town. El Caminos. T-Birds. Chevelles. Novas.

He claimed the front passenger seat, the most coveted of all positions, by calling 'Shotgun,' as we walked out to the car. Luckily, I was the driver and didn't get stuck sitting in the rear seat. Everyone knows that there are only two cool positions in a car: Driver and Shotgun. Or do they?

Do other countries invoke the Calling of Shotgun? The term came from the covered wagon days when the driver was too busy holding the reins and driving the horses to watch out for thieves and malcontents. Maaco takes his job very seriously. Of course, to him, a malcontent is most likely a kitty but, he is very alert and always on the look out for trouble.

Here in the Wonderland, we are kicking off Kool April Nites week. Thousands of people are rolling into town to show off their wicked fast, classic and vintage automobiles. Shiny wheels spin memories, thick as golden oldie butter, of the 1950's back into solid form. Spreading the week with gobs of car shows, drag races, sock hops and crooners makes for a really good time.

This is a big week for the Wonder Hubby, too. He is in all his glory when he's looking at, working on and talking about classic cars. In fact, there are times I think he must have been a Chevy in a past life. He channels cars like I channel spirits. And by spirits, I mean ghosties. Not liquor. Although, I have been known, on occasion, to channel that too. But, that's our little secret.

Oops! Gotta go. Maaco wants to chase a foxy, blond, retriever, bitch he just spotted. She's sporting a curly, puppy dog tail, wearing a Poodle skirt and riding shotgun in a Mustang convertible. Apparently, it's 'woof' at first sight. If he was looking for trouble, I think he just found it!
See ya on the cruise!

Wow, has it been a year since you last posted about this event. Seems like it was just a few months ago.

Grandkids always yell, "Shotgun" when heading out to the car, but if they got to ride in Maaco's car then there would be declared war for the "Shotgun" spot.

I prefer to be the driver so as to avoid getting carsick. But the few times that I do not drive, I do get to ride "Shotgun". Grandmas rate very well with the Grandkids.

God bless.

I love those old vintage car shows -- we have them in P-town but they are not usually that big-- but they are always fun and some very nice rigs do roll in.

It looks like it is going to be lots of fun-- to bad it is not during the time I am going south to visit some friends otherwise would stop by -- .

You dog is too cute for words -- all he needs is the scarf, goggles and hat.

What you call riding shotgun, I call 'the death seat'. It's not a great expression, but the front passenger seat is more dangerous than the rear. This denies the spirit of your post, Ronda and I don't want to spoil the fun. Besides I regularly travel shot gun in the death seat.

Happy for your Wonder Hubby, this is a fun week for him. Enjoy the other cars, but remember you have a couple of the best ones!!

Your dog captured my entire attention. The combination of dark skin, light brown eyes, red collar, and intelligent look on his face - stirred up emotions in me.
Have great fun on the cars' event!

I do wonder if what other people call the front passenger seat? Good question! As the youngest of 7 growing up, I had to sit in way back seat of the station wagon in the middle. I loved it when my siblings grew up and moved out and I got to sit shotgun! That car shows sounds awesome. My son is a car fanatic and we take him to the Philly car show every year.

Maaco looks so RIGHT in the classic car. Except - shouldn't he be wearing shades?

Uuuh, how much fun is THAT? This looks like an awesome event! :D

Ok, everybody in the world knows that the backseat is for babies, losers and maybe granny.
But no, people of other countries don't call it "shotgun". I believe it only makes sense in a wild and crazy country like America where people used to exercise self administered justice quite frequently if we can believe John Wayne and Clint Eastwood at all.
People of other countries just know intuitively that shotgun is second best to being the driver and there is the same kind of rivalry about that seat. I've certainly had my share of conflict about it in the past. But that's long ago. Shotgun is my acquired RIGHT now if I happen not to drive myself. And no one better challenge me, except Maaco maybe. He looks intimidating... :-o

Oh yeah: in Germany we just say: I'll be sitting in the front.
How amazingly creative is that? ;)

Sherry: I can just see your grandkids scrambling and yelling shotgun as the try to get into the car. I'll bet you're one heck of a driver and a shotgun.

Joanny: Oh, if you ever do head this way, let me know and we'll try to hook up. You just gave me a good idea for Maaco's cosutme: scarf, goggles and hat.

Brian: I'll bet your kids holler it all the time. Yep, fun times are a comin'.

Elisabeth: Well, I think the "death seat" is probably as appropriate a name for the passenger seat too. Even back in the olden days, shotgun had to have been a very dangerous situation to be in if things went bad.

TechnoBabe: Thanks, yes, Wonder Hubby is detailing his cars as we speak...or, rather, write;)

DUTA: He is very, very, very smart. Sometimes too much so. It's hard to keep up with a smart dog.

Kate: I'm just starting find out what other countries call it. Christina, below, made a comment about it. I'm happy to hear you take your son to the car show. It is truly good family entertainment.

Reya: You are so right, he does need shades...and maybe a surfer shirt?

Christina: Isn't it funny how people know that rear seat is second best, even though, as Elisabeth points out, it is not as safe. Wow! So the German's just say, "I'll be sitting in front." HA! That is funny.

Willow: I think Maaco is handsome too. But my friend, NB, calls him "Ugly Dog." I'll bet you do miss those days when your kids called shotgun.

Jai: Glad you enjoyed the photos. Maaco is one powerful pooch.

I lived for a number of years in a town that was famous for its classics car museum. In the fall, they have ACD days with a major car auction and a parade. My grandfather owned a Model T for years that was just beautiful.

I followed you over from Jai Joshi's blog. Congrats on your award. Now a follower :)

Stacy: The Grocery Getter is getting detailed for this weekend. He looks good in it too.

Carolina: I hope you got to ride in your grandfather's Model-T. What memories. Thanks for visiting the Wonderland and the follow.

Maaco is one cool dog! He knows how to pick his owners and his cars.

I love car shows. Great for hubby that he has something that keeps him happy. Not that you couldn't pull that off all by yourself with such sizzle....

Megan said...

Oh my goodness. We still call shotgun. We have a rule that you have to be able to SEE the car before you can call it. I think my parents encouraged this because it meant we would actually be out of the house before the fight started...

:)

Ronda Laveen said...

Dorraine: Maaco is one cool cruiser. Hubby does have such a great time but, you are right, I do too:-P

Megan: I think that your parents ar right about being able to see the car before you call. I ran across an office Shotgun rule book the other night. I'll see if I can send you the link.

Tail end stooge, is what we used to call your riding shotgun. My compliments to wonder hubby!

I love your Maaco!!!!! And I love the expression "shotgun." I had guessed, but never known for sure, just where it came from.

Hope you're having a ton of fun!

Ronda Laveen said...

Dave: Tail end stooge, huh? That's as cool as shotgun. Thanks for the 411.

Leah: I thought you might like Maaco, seeing as you're in a puppy frame of mind. We are having fun.

Dogs always seem to get shotgun...

Baino said...

Yep we call it shotgun too! Remind me never to get into the front seat of your car with my black coat on! Have fun, sounds like a colourful and noisy weekend ahead.

Ronda Laveen said...

VE: Yep, they are very good at it. Always watching and scanning for trouble.

Baino: Are you afraid you'll be mistaken for Maaco with your black coat on? Glad to know that down under, it is called shotgun too.
